Silence Therapeutics

The pharma company Silence Therapeutics organised an international event in June with their employees, their #MonthToMove, challenging the Silence team to get ‘moving’ for their partner patient groups, with a pound donated by Silence for every kilometre covered.

MDS Patient Support

The team collectively covered 8,558km, meaning Silence will donate £8,558 spread across their seven core charity partners. They also raised a further £650 via their JustGiving page, bringing the current total to £9,208. This means they will be donating £1,315 to MDS UK.

We are super impressed and very grateful to all employees for rising so energetically to the challenge, and to Silence Therapeutics for the ongoing support and commitment to patient charities.

MDS Patient Support

Silence Therapeutic aims at transforming the treatment of diseases through precision engineered medicines. Silence is advancing a new generation of medicines to potentially address the needs of patients who have limited or inadequate treatment options, MDS patients among them.

All the money raised will go to ensure that all patients and families receive the attention and information they need during those particularly difficult times – straight after diagnosis, at treatment changes, time of transplant or progression of the condition.

Thomas and MyCSP’s Fitness Fundraiser

Thomas Chappell and his team at MyCSP have raised an incredible £750 for our life-changing work through a fitness challenge!

The April-May event was flexible, with some using their one form of exercise to run or cycle and those shielding using exercise bikes.

With our financial situation impacted by Covid19, Thomas pushed for us when his company decided that each team should raise money for a chosen charity.

MyCSP has a “community fund” which teams can apply for to donate to charity. Participants kept track of their progress on distance apps and sent pictures to their managers.

Thomas, whose father has been an MDS patient since 2012, credits MDS UK’s community and support of MDS UK as instrumental to seeing his Dad through the worst of his diagnosis.

It was a no-brainer that I suggested MDS UK for my team

Thomas said to us:

“It was a company-wide thing that we decided to do something for charity, and it was a no-brainer that I suggested MDS UK for my team.”

“The decision was unanimous as they were so moved by my Dad’s story, who is now in remission since receiving a stem cell transplant following his progression to leukaemia."

“The charity has been amazing. The research they are currently doing is great and the meetings are a great source of support for Dad."

“The first thing I did when I knew we were doing this was ask him about MDS UK as I know it’s been a tough time for charities. We are really happy that we’ve helped so much.”

MDS UK would like to say a huge thank you to Thomas and his team at MyCSP for their selfless efforts in helping us through these tough times!
We would also like to wish Thomas’ father continued improvement in his MDS journey!

If you or your company are now inspired and wish to raise funds for MDS UK, please contact us on fundraising@mdspatientsupport.org.uk and we will be happy to help!

SMART Qualifications SMART Classes

SMART Qualifications Team and SMART Classes came together to raise funds for three charities that are close to their hearts and MDS UK Patient Support Group is one of them!

Throughout 2019 they will be fund raising holding events where we all can be involved. The monies raised will be split equally between all three charities at the end of the year.

smart-qualifications-walking-around-the-world

SMART Qualifications Team are a training provider for the fitness industry so they wanted to make their fundraising something about keeping on the move so they are virtually going to go around the world walking, running, cycling, swimming, stepping, boxing, whatever our activity of choice!

Their learners, participants and staff are going to record their steps and see if we can travel the 24,901 miles (40,075 kms) around the world, that's nearly 50 million steps!

They will also be doing a variety of activities over the year to raise money including some physical challenges including double ups, a plank challenge, press-ups in a minute etc. as well as walking around the world.

They are now a quarter of the way in to their virtual walk around the world challenge and most participants are on schedule to walk their chosen country and more besides.

Smart Qualifications are not only fundraising for MDS UK Patient Support Group, but also doing an incredible job at raising awareness of the disease:

For us, as a small charity, it is a dream to get such a generous institution to fundraise for us. We are extremely grateful to Smart Qualifications for thinking of us.

All the money raised will go to ensure that all patients and families receive the attention and information they need during those particularly difficult times – straight after diagnosis, at treatment changes, time of transplant or progression of the condition.

Amadeus UK

Amadeus UK have signed up to do a Group Skydive: a hair-raising obstacle assault course on September 24th in support of MDS UK Patient Support Group.

MDS Patient Support

Amadeus, the leading provider of IT solutions to the global tourism and travel industry, are not new to giving, having donated an amazing £3,000 for MacMillan last year.

This year, they are not only fundraising for MDS UK Patient Support Group, but also doing an incredible job at raising awareness of the disease:

We are raising money for our colleague who is suffering from a cancer condition called Myelodysplastic Syndrome known as MDS, very few people are diagnosed in the UK from this condition and infact in the USA just 63 per year.

A person with MDS will suffer from chronic tiredness and weakness due to the low levels of haemoglobin in the red blood cells, which carries oxygen to the body.
This is debilitating in itself and often requires regular blood transfusions. Transfusions are time consuming and restrictive.

In MDS, platelet numbers, which prevent bleeding and bruising, can often be very low. This can result in spontaneous bleeding and bruising.
If an injury is sustained blood loss may be excessive. Clearly these factors result in many constraints and difficulties. Platelet transfusions may be required on a regular basis.

When white cells numbers become very low (as they often do in MDS) the body is unable to fight off infection normally. This results in a greater than usual incidence of infections which take longer than usual to clear and might require hospitalisation. White cells cannot be given by transfusion.

We are collecting money for the charity that is looking into new research to better manage the situation and look for extending quality of life. Our colleague has a young family and lives in Crawley in West Sussex and has been unable to work for over two years now.

For us, as a small charity, it is a dream to get such a generous fundraiser. We are extremely grateful to Amadeus for thinking of us.

All the money raised will go to ensure that all patients and families receive the attention and information they need during those particularly difficult times – straight after diagnosis, at treatment changes, time of transplant or progression of the condition./strong>

Mortgage Brain

An incredibly generous donation of £8,000 for MDS UK Patient Support Group has come from Mortgage Brain – a firm offering mortgage software solutions for Intermediaries and Lenders with over 100 employees based in London and Worcestershire

MDS Patient Support

Suzanne Green, director of Marketing and Partner Propositions, communicated the great news to us:

We raised a substantial amount of money at a 30th Birthday Charity event attended by 320 colleagues and customers in London through sponsorship, a silent auction, raffle and personal donations on 27th April and it was by all accounts a great night had by all.

So I am delighted on behalf of Mortgage Brain to confirm that we will be making an approximate donation of £8,000 to the MDS UK Patient Support Group. The charity was nominated by our Mortgage Brain colleague, Kay Goodwin.

All the charities nominated are all actively supported through fundraising or volunteering by one or more of my colleagues. The donation will be a mixture of corporate and personal donations.

We are utterly grateful to Mortgage Brain and to Kay Goodwin for thinking of us. What a superb fundraiser event! Our CONGRATULATIONS for these 30 years of success for the company!

MDS Patient Support

For us, as a small charity, it is a dream to get such a generous fundraiser.

THANKS A MILLION TO MORTGAGE BRAIN EMPLOYEES FOR THEIR GENEROSITY!!

ASDA Public vote and donation scheme

September 2014ASDA-web003
We are pleased to announce that we have received the runners-up prize in the ASDA donation scheme – in the ASDA store of the Old Kent Road. This is the local store to King’s College Hospital.
We thank staff member Claire Gager, Community Life Champion for delivering the cheque for £50 to our offices.
All ASDA stores run this same scheme – and we encourage all our patients and family members to request their local ASDA stores to enter MDS UK as one of their charities. It is the same token system as Waitrose.
In this scheme, 3 charities can enter each month. Winners receive £200 and runners up £50 each.
Thank you to ASDA and all their customers for their votes.

Waitrose

As part of the Community Matters project, each month every Waitrose branch donates £1,000 between three local good causes that their customers choose.
