Volunteer

Could you help make a difference to people affected by MDS or CMML?

We are recruiting a team of MDS UK Ambassadors to help promote and co-ordinate the work of MDS UK in their region.

As an MDS UK Ambassador you could help us take our aims forward to the next level.  An Ambassador could be somebody who has MDS or CMML, or a friend or family member of somebody with MDS or CMML.

The ways in which Ambassadors help are varied and we would expect people to do only as much as they can. Here are just a few examples of possible MDS UK Ambassador roles:

MDS Patient Support

Patient Engagement Ambassador

  • Help with proofreading MDS UK information materials
  • Help with proofreading and commenting on patient information for clinical trials
  • Be prepared to train to speak or give written input as an expert patient
MDS Patient Support

Regional Ambassador

  • Publicise online MDS UK support group meetings and encourage people with MDS/CMML and their families to attend.
  • Operate a regional “Buddy” system with e-mail groups or 1-1 phone chats.
  • Host online Zoom meetings. If you feel this is something you would like to do, there is support and guidance on this.

MDS Patient Support

Local Awareness Ambassador

  • Respond to posts on Facebook, X and Instagram, or the MDS Chat Forum on the MDS UK website.
  • Write to your MP and tell them about MDS/CMML and how it affects you, highlighting any issues you have experienced in accessing treatment and care.
  • Contact local media outlets with information on MDS/CMML at key times such as MDS World Awareness Day, Rare Diseases Day and Blood Cancer Awareness Month.
MDS Patient Support

Local Fundraising Ambassador

  • Assist the MDS UK Fundraising & Communications Officer with recruiting, supporting and motivating local fundraisers.

What our Ambassadors say

I have only just joined the volunteering group but have immediately been made to feel really welcome. I joined following a request in the e-newsletter for help with a task that I thought I could do, but it has made me think that most of us could help in some way. I really would recommend giving it a try. Pam J, Patient Engagement Ambassador

I could never have anticipated the buzz I have had from contact with other MDS patients in Scotland and beyond. Meeting and communicating with others as a volunteer makes me feel that something good is coming out of this horrible disease - for me and hopefully others. So, if you have any interest - give it a go! Maureen S, Regional Ambassador, Scotland.
