Melissa Smellie – Trustee

Melissa began her career with a PhD funded by the Cancer Research Campaign (now Cancer Research UK), before spending more than 25 years in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry.

During this time she worked on clinical trials and later held senior roles supporting the development of new medicines with both small biotechs and large pharmaceutical companies.

After taking time out to travel with her family, Melissa was diagnosed with breast cancer and experienced the healthcare system from a patient’s perspective. This has strengthened her commitment to improving support, information and outcomes for people living with cancers.

Melissa is delighted to join MDS UK as a trustee and hopes to use her scientific background, clinical experience and personal insight to help raise awareness of MDS and support the charity’s mission.

Outside of her trustee role, Melissa lives in Hertfordshire with her husband, two children and their two dogs.
