We know how important patient to patient contact is for everyone. \nWe’ve held 2 online/virtual Zoom meetings – one for MDS Patients only and one for MDS Patients and their caregivers/supporters – in order “to test the waters”. Feedback has been very positive\, and patients who had not been able to attend face-to-face meetings for various reasons were able to participate. Hence\, we are now offering online meetings open to all members and carers. \nWhatever happens during and after the COVID-19 pandemic\, we aim to maintain some virtual meetings\, as it has attracted new members\, who had not attending face to face meetings previously. \nWe may\, in time\, turn those into regional groups too – if they attract sufficient participants. So – if in hope for a proper in person meeting soon\, please join the virtual ones for now – and get to know other MDS UK members. \nThis current meeting is open mainly to all Oxford local members and their carers\, as well as people in the wider Oxfordshire area. \nWe are also planning to provide nationwide meetings with particular topics which you may find of interest. Please let us know if you have any topic in mind. \nMany patients have already embraced the video meeting call technology Zoom (or something similar) in order to stay in touch with family members during the lockdown. \nIf you haven’t\, please contact us. Please also see our guidance on how to use Zoom. If you are a first time user of video call – please don’t worry. The first 15 minutes of each meeting will be set aside to sort out any technical issues. \nIf you have not contacted the MDS UK Patient Support Group before and would like to receive a full Patient Information Pack\, please contact our Main Office. \n\n\n\n\nClaudia Richards \n\n\nMDS UK Main Office \n\n\n\n\noxfordgroup@mdspatientsupport.org.uk \n\n\nadmin1@mdspatientsupport.org.uk \n\n\n\n\n07979 250563 \n\n\n0207 733 7558 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Download a poster for your clinic

SUMMARY:THIS MEETING HAS BEEN CANCELLED: Midlands MDS UK Local Patient Meeting – 13/03/2020
DESCRIPTION:IMPORTANT NOTE: THIS MEETING HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO CORONAVIRUS PRECAUTIONS \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMIDLANDS REGION MDS SUPPORT GROUP MEETINGS\nPATIENT-TO-PATIENT SUPPORT FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY MYELODYSPLASTIC SYNDROMES\nA MEETING FOR COFFEE AND A CHAT\nCome and join this newly created group in the Midlands region. All local patients are welcome to attend\, as are relatives and friends.\nThis is an opportunity to get to know one another\, share experiences and increase the support network in the area. \nThis is also an important opportunity for newly-diagnosed patients to meet others who have been living with MDS for a while. \nDate:              13th March 2020\nTime:              10.30 am – 12:30 pm – Tea and coffee will be served from 11:00 am\nLocation:          Seminar room 1 – Education Centre\n Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham\n Mindelsohn Way\, Edgbaston\, Birmingham\, B15 2GW \nAgenda: \n\nInitial Meeting Introductions\nQ & A Session\nQuality of Life Discussion – Patients and carers share their experience in dealing with the disease\nDate of Next Meeting\n\nPlease feel free to suggest topics and themes that you would like to hear about – or speakers you have found helpful.\nPlease also consider giving a brief informal chat yourself about how you are dealing with MDS – what you have learnt\, what has been helpful\, what has been good to avoid as well. This is incredibly useful information to share with others. \nA few words from Sophia\, Midlands Group Coordinator:\n“I started to learn more about MDS following my Grandad’s diagnosis back in 2017.\nLooking back on this period I recall the uncertainty and isolation that followed the knowledge that this was a ‘rare’ cancer. Having heard of the success of the other regional support groups\, I was determined to bring this initiative to the inevitably large patient and relative population of the Midlands region. I appreciate the potential for such a group to provide that unique degree of comfort that is necessary alongside the standard medical care.\nHaving completed my Medical Sciences degree I am now spending the year working in research at the Queen Elizabeth before returning to university to begin my medicine degree. My mum has also worked within the trust for the past 20 years. Together\, we are both very familiar with the hospital and its welcoming environment. Looking back to the time when I knew very little about MDS\, it is incredible to now be able to set up the very first Midlands Region Support group. I hope these meetings provide a friendly platform to gain the necessary knowledge\, guidance and support that remains individual to every person living with MDS and their loved ones. I look forward to meeting many of you!”
