SUMMARY:Adam's 20 for 20 Challenge for MDS UK
DESCRIPTION:Our dear Ambassador Adam Keay is rowing 10km everyday for 20 days to raise funds for MDS UK because his mum passed away from this rare blood cancer. \nAdam says in his JustGiving page: \nAfter several hospital visits and treatments for what we initially thought was anaemia\, my mum was diagnosed in 2014 with Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS)\, a rare form of blood cancer. Following her diagnosis\, and whilst I was studying for my master’s degree\, I would take mum for regular blood transfusions\, biopsies and tests at Kings College Hospital (Kings)\, London on a weekly basis. However\, in less than six months\, her health rapidly deteriorated to the point at which her only option was to undertake a bone-marrow transplant. \nAfter two months in isolation within the hospital ward and a transplant completed\, a light at the end of the tunnel began to appear\, including a few new strands of hair on mum’s head which I had somehow become accustomed to. Despite making initial signs of improvement\, my mum developed an aggressive infection and her health deteriorated significantly in just a few weeks. As a result\, she was admitted into intensive care at Kings\, where she stayed for several months before passing away. \nThroughout this period\, I will never forget my mum’s resilience and relentless attitude to fight against her cancer. Knowing how weak she felt most days due to having a low blood count\, and supporting her during her treatments\, she always carried a smile and was an inspiration. \nIn memory of my mum and to support those in the fight against MDS\, I am seeking to raise greater awareness about this disease by getting involved in MDS UK’s 20 for 20 Challenge. From Monday 01 November 2021\, I will be rowing 10km every day for the next 20 days (200km) using my indoor rowing machine to raise awareness and funds for MDS UK\, a small charity which provides patients with invaluable support. All donations will go towards funding clinical trials of new drugs and key research\, including patient support and treatments such as blood transfusions\, chemotherapy and stem-cell transplants. \nAs an Ambassador for MDS UK\, I would be truly grateful for any donation you can make to help beat this disease. Every pound (£) donated to MDS UK will not only help to support families and their loved ones undertaking cancer treatment\, but also to share precious moment together for longer which we all take for granted. \nMDS UK is the only charity in the UK providing vital support\, information\, advice and conducting research solely into Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) – a rare blood cancer where the bone marrow fails to produce healthy blood cells. We are a small charity that needs YOUR support to maintain our services! \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Support Adam\, donate now on his 20for20 JustGiving Page \n \n	\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n	We are incredibly grateful to Adam for raising funds and awareness of MDS. \nToday\, more than ever\, we need generous people like him\, to maintain our services to MDS patients and their families during Covid-19. \nYOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! SUMMARY:Khirstie Bromage run half a marathon for MDS UK!
DESCRIPTION:Khirstie Bromage run the Stroud Half Marathon on the 24th of October to help our small charity! \nKhirstie says in her JustGiving Page: \n4 years ago My mum was diagnosed with MDS (myleodysplastic syndrome) it is a blood disorder where the bone marrow fails to produce healthy blood cells. \nIn the last year I have seen my mum bravely endure so many blood tests \, blood transfusions\, platelet transfusions. Nights in hospital. Being unable to leave the house because of covid \, unable to see family and friends because of the risk due to low immunity and the effects of how a simple cold can make Mum feel. \nNow this disease has progressed a bit and the consultant has decided that Mum has to have a course of chemo and a stem cell transplant Mum and dad have again bravely accepted this next phase with positivity \nI have struggled with my own running motivation lately. So have decided to enter Stroud half marathon and raise money for MDS UK to both raise awareness and money to help more people like my mum. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n You can still donate on Khirstie's JustGiving Page! \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	Thank you so much for your support\, Khirstie! \nWe are so grateful to you and your friends and family for raising important funds and awareness to of MDS. \nYou are making a difference. SUMMARY:Caitlin Limmer 10 hours spinathon for MDS UK!
DESCRIPTION:On October 20th our unstoppable patron Caitlin Limmer span in the centre of Richmond\, Surrey for 10 hours to raise awareness for MDS and MDS Patient Support Group! \nCaitlin says in her Virgin Money Giving page: \nOctober the 25th is World MDS Day and as Patron of the charity and someone who has Myelodisplastic Syndrome it means a lot to me to fly the flag for MDS. \nMDS is a rare blood cancer which I have had for 17 years and thankfully at present is being well behaved. SUMMARY:Vanessa Collu run the Cabbage Patch 10 for MDS UK
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday October 17th Vanessa Collu run The Cabbage Patch and now she is still raising money for MDS UK! \nVanessa says in her JustGiving Page:\n \nDuring this year’s grim winter lockdown Caitlin Limmer’s live zoom runs kept me fit and sane. Now that restrictions have eased it’s been a pleasure to join her running club\, the Bearcats\, and encouraged by them I have signed up to my longest run to date\, a ten miler! \nAs it affects some members directly\, the MDS charity is very close to the Bearcats heart. It supports people who have this form of blood cancer\, and needs all the publicity and support it can get. I will be wearing an MDS t shirt on the day\, but would love to also contribute some funds. If you can spare a donation\, however small\, I would be very grateful. \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n You can still donate on Vanessa's JustGiving Page! \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	Thank you so much for your support\, Vanessa! \nWe are so grateful to you for raising important funds and awareness of MDS. \nYou are making a difference. All the money we get goes to assist patients and families with information\, support and advice. \nAn hour on the helpline to newly diagnosed patients makes an immense difference to most patients.\nOur online patient meetings are the next step – to help patients cope emotionally and make more sense of the medical journey they are on.\nOur website and newsletter help with up-to-date information which is often needed\, in particular now\, in the midst of the covid 19 pandemic. \nAll requires time and funds. \nWith your help – we can help. \nMany thanks from the MDS UK Team \n\n\n\n \n \n \n You can still donate on Vanessa's JustGiving Page! \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n	Latest News \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n MDS World Awareness Day October 25th – 2025 \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Blood transfusions explained : by Kelly Nwankiti\, Lead Nurse at King’s College Hospital \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Free NHS App for blood transfusion patients \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n ‘Coping with an MDS Diagnosis’ – Presentation by Senior Psychotherapist Surabhi Chaturvedi \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n New PyramIDH clinical trial for MDS with IDH1-mutation now recruiting in the UK \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Understanding stem cell therapy for MDS \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Thanks to our fundraisers\, a new MDS Quality of Life study is possible \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Update: Could Vitamin B5 help alleviate anaemia in MDS patients? \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Transforming MDS Care: New Patient Portal in Development – Dr Luke Carter-Brzezinski \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Joe Thomas is swimming the English Channel for MDS UK

SUMMARY:Jacqui Avola is running TWO Marathons in aid of MDS UK!
DESCRIPTION:Jacqui Avola is running two full marathons to raise money for our charity. \nJacqui explains on her Virgin Money Giving Page the reasons why she has chosen to fundraise for us: \n\nOn the 2nd July 2014 my Dad was diagnosed with MDS. Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) are a group of cancers in which immature blood cells in the bone marrow do not mature and therefore do not become healthy blood cells. \nOn the 4th October 2015 my Dad was fit and healthy enough to receive a bone marrow transplant. Throughout this period of time I tried to carry on with life and pretend it wasn’t happening\, everything with my Dad was a bit of blur and I ended up making some pretty life changing decisions myself\, life is precious and can be too short.  My Dad is my ultimate hero\, he is ALWAYS there for me no matter what and there is NOTHING he wouldn’t do for me. \nThis is now my time to give something back for him and my Dad has chosen for me to run these two marathons for MDS UK Patient Support Group. \nMDS UK Patient Support Group is a charity based at Kings College in London. They provide networking for people newly diagnosed\, where experiences can be shared with others that are suffering the same illness. A contact line is set up and help is provided\, invaluable for people needing to understand medical terminology and prognosis. \nThey provide national patient and family information meetings on a regional basis\, along with many other amazing things. \nPlease support this fantastic charity and follow me on my journey. \n\nWe are immensely grateful to Jacqui and her Dad for thinking of us\, and to their friends and family for their generosity which will make a great difference to patients. \nLet’s help Jacqui attain her fundraising target of £500!  \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Please Donate on Jacqui Avola's Virgin Money Giving Page \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\nAbout London and Milton Keynes Marathons\n\nThe renowned London Marathon takes place on Sunday\, 03 October 2021. At the marathon the biggest names in distance running meet and compete alongside amateur runners. \nThe Milton Keynes Marathon took place on Sunday 6th September 2020. The majority of the MK Marathon route is incredibly green and scenic. It includes beautiful parks and lakes\, picturesque villages and the canal towpath. \nJacqui will have run these two marathons to raise funds for us! Please support Jacqui’s amazing challenge. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n	Latest News \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n MDS World Awareness Day October 25th – 2025 \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Blood transfusions explained : by Kelly Nwankiti\, Lead Nurse at King’s College Hospital \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Free NHS App for blood transfusion patients \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n ‘Coping with an MDS Diagnosis’ – Presentation by Senior Psychotherapist Surabhi Chaturvedi \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n New PyramIDH clinical trial for MDS with IDH1-mutation now recruiting in the UK \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Understanding stem cell therapy for MDS \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Thanks to our fundraisers\, a new MDS Quality of Life study is possible \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Update: Could Vitamin B5 help alleviate anaemia in MDS patients? \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Transforming MDS Care: New Patient Portal in Development – Dr Luke Carter-Brzezinski \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Joe Thomas is swimming the English Channel for MDS UK

SUMMARY:Tina Deller will run the Virtual London Marathon for MDS UK
DESCRIPTION:Tina Deller is running the Virgin London Marathon on Sunday 3 October 2021 in memory of her dad. \nShe will run the virtual marathon\, which gives participants the opportunity to take on the world’s greatest marathon on the course of their choice\, wherever they are. \nRunners in the virtual event will join a record 50\,000 participants who will run the traditional Virgin Money London Marathon from Blackheath to The Mall. \n\n\n\n \n \n \n Please Donate on Tina's Virgin Money Giving Page \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	Tina says: \n“For those that don’t know I lost my hero\, my Dad\, this year. I know they are not your usual huge charities and won’t affect most of you but they do so much for so many and survive mostly on charity donations. \nAnyway\, enough rambling from me\, thanks for taking the time to read this and even bigger thanks if you donate – I’ll do my absolute best to get through all those 26+ miles! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\nLondon Virtual Marathon\n\n \n \n \n Please Donate on Tina's Virgin Money Giving Page \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou can also make a significant difference to our small charity. SUMMARY:Alastair Day and Jacqui Avola are running the London Marathon for MDS UK!
DESCRIPTION:We feel so blessed to have two runners on the Virgin London Marathon on Sunday 3 October 2021! \nBoth Alastair and Jacqui are running the actual marathon – not the virtual one\, which is an incredible achievement. It is close to impossible for small charities like us to get new places at the Virgin London Marathon\, hence we need to rely on ballot places. \nAlastair is an unstoppable supporter of MDS UK. He is an MDS patient himself and continued fundraising for us even during the pandemics. \n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Please Donate on Alastair's JustGiving Page \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	Alastair says: \n“Thanks to everybody who supported me in 2020 when we raised over £1\,500 against my running target of 4\,000km.  2020 was disappointing since all events were cancelled… \nI was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome in late 2016 and am currently in a low risk category with regular blood checks and luckily no intervention or drugs. \nSince many patients are far worse off than me\, I am trying to raise more money in 2021 to add to charity funds\, increase awareness and support sufferers of MDS. Now more than ever\, the MDS needs funding since many charity and running events have been cancelled\, so please donate any amount to help the MDS UK Patient Support Group – £2\, £5\, £10″ \nJacqui Avola is also an old friend. SUMMARY:An MDS Diagnosis won't stop Nick Hall!
DESCRIPTION:Nick Hall completed an absolutely gruelling cycle tour around Portugal\, with crazy climbs of over 2000 meters! \nNick says in his JustGiving page: \n\nMany of you will know I was diagnosed some years ago with MDS\, a relatively rare form of blood cancer. Fortunately for me it is not aggressive\, (for others it can be very aggressive) although it does impact significantly on my red blood cells and consequently my energy levels. \nRiding the length of Portugal in 5 days (150km per day) would be a big challenge without MDS\, with it is an even bigger challenge! \nMDS support does some amazing work supporting people with MDS\, their families and carers and like most small charities has suffered a huge loss of income during the pandemic! \nI appreciate not everyone can donate but you could do something even more amazing – you\, or if you are not eligible\, your kids\, grandkids\, nieces\, nephews could join the bone marrow register and potentially save the life of someone with blood cancer. Joining the register is easy https://www.dkms.org.uk or www.anthonynolan.org \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n You can still support Nick and help him raise funds for MDS UK! \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n You can still support Nick and help him raise funds for MDS UK! \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	All hats off and drum rolls for Nick who was diagnosed with MDS a few years ago. We are immensely grateful for what he has put himself through to raise money for the charity and raise awareness of MDS. \nA BIG BIG THANK YOU for putting such brilliant efforts to raise funds and awareness of MDS.

SUMMARY:Peter Cresswell is taking on the Thames Path Challenge - Ultra 2021\, for MDS UK!
DESCRIPTION:We have just found out that Peter is taking on a 100 km walk  in aid of MDS UK\, because – in his words – we’ve “really helped a friend out”. \nThe Thames Path Challenge – Ultra is not for the faint-hearted! Participants run\, jog or walk all the way along the Thames Path from Putney to Henley in under 24 hours. Peter is making this incredible effort as part of his lose weight / gain fitness journey over Covid times\, and has already lost an amazing 60 lbs as he prepares for this challenge. \nThis is what Peter has told us:- \nMy friend & former work colleague Emma has been given a lot of help by the MDS UK Patient Support Group over the past few years. The way she’s borne up and remained positive through many years of illness has been incredibly inspiring\, going right back to when I covered her work during her first bone marrow transplant. Since then she’s been an incredible inspiration\, blogging about her successes and setbacks\, and she has put in a massive effort to stay fit and active.  \nMore recently\, during Covid 19\, I made a fairly major lifestyle change as I’d managed to let my weight push over 27 stone / 173kg. Since lockdown 1 in March 2020 I’ve been eating healthily and putting in a lot of miles of walking and running\, and have managed to lose over 9 1/2 stone / 60kg. As part of motivating myself for this effort I signed up to walk the 100km (62 mile) Thames Path Challenge in 1 day. I deliberately paid my own entry fee\, always intending to choose a charity ahead of the event to fundraise for.  \nRecently Emma discovered that MDS UK still had several places going for the Great North Run\, and posted on Facebook talking about how the charity have been incredibly supportive of her\, and encouraging her friends to consider taking up places – and she’s even scheduled her chemotherapy schedule around running it herself! I’m not (yet) fit enough for a half marathon (I’m hoping to get there in 2022)\, and the GNR starts a few hours after I’m due to finish the Thames Path Challenge so I wasn’t able to take a spot. However\, her words inspired me to look into MDS UK and the work they do\, and ultimately choose them to fundraise for. \nI’m really proud that I’ve been able to use my own transformation to give publicity to such a great small charity\, and amazed that I’ve been able to inspire my friends to respond so positively and generously.  \nWe are so grateful to Peter for making MDS UK his chosen charity because we have been able to offer support to Emma through her on-going treatment for MDS. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Please Donate on Peter Cresswell's JustGiving Page \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\nYou can also make a significant difference to our small charity. MDS UK does not get London Marathon places – and relies on runners with ballot places. Please enter the ballot for next year and consider running for MDS UK.  \nAll the money we get goes to assist patients and families with information\, support and advice. \n\nAn hour on the helpline to newly diagnosed patients makes such a difference in most situations.\nOur information meetings are the next step – to help patients cope with making more sense of the medical journey they are on.\nOur local meetings help with the ongoing emotional support that is often needed.\n\nAll of this requires time and funds. Please enter the ballot and run for us! Every single runner will be absolutely worshipped! \nWith your help – we can help. \nMany thanks from the MDS UK Team \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n	Latest News \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n MDS World Awareness Day October 25th – 2025 \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Blood transfusions explained : by Kelly Nwankiti\, Lead Nurse at King’s College Hospital \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Free NHS App for blood transfusion patients \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n ‘Coping with an MDS Diagnosis’ – Presentation by Senior Psychotherapist Surabhi Chaturvedi \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n New PyramIDH clinical trial for MDS with IDH1-mutation now recruiting in the UK \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Understanding stem cell therapy for MDS \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Thanks to our fundraisers\, a new MDS Quality of Life study is possible \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Update: Could Vitamin B5 help alleviate anaemia in MDS patients? \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Transforming MDS Care: New Patient Portal in Development – Dr Luke Carter-Brzezinski \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n Joe Thomas is swimming the English Channel for MDS UK

SUMMARY:Matt & friends 24 Hours of Overwatch\, Gaming Livestream for MDS UK
DESCRIPTION:On the 27th of August Matt\, Rob and 3 of his friends are planning to do a 24 hour gaming marathon of the video game Overwatch to raise money for the MDS UK Patient Support Group. \nRob and Matt’s Dad\, Nick Hall\, was diagnosed with MDS over five years ago. Matt told us he spoke to his dad about who he would like us to raise money for to help support MDS patients and help research\, and he instantly sent the link to our website. We are immensely grateful to Nick and his family. \nMatt has done charity fundraising in the past for us and last summer they did a very similar event to raise money for a local Cancer Support Centre and raised and amazing £1385! They’d be looking to raise a similar amount (if not more!). \n\n\n\n \n \n \n Support Matt and help him raise funds for MDS UK! \n \n	\n\nAnd look how exciting the day looks!\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n	Matt tells in his JustGiving page: \nMDS is a group of malignant blood disorders in which the bone marrow fails to produce healthy blood cells. It is a form of bone marrow cancer and treatments range from medication such as EPO to blood transfusions. In the long term\, a stem cell transplant (bone marrow transplant) can offer the chance of curing the disease. \nThe MDS UK Patient Support Group aim to raise awareness of MDS\, offer support and information to patient and families and campaign to increase the quality of life and make treatments available to those affected by MDS. \nAs well as raising money for this brilliant charity\, we will also be encouraging people to have a look at Anthony Nolan Trust\, and consider joining their register to donate stem cells. \nAny level of support is hugely appreciated\, however large or small\, and come and cheer us along on the 27th August from 5pm. We’ll be live on our Twitch channel and also on our Facebook page. \nWe’ll be setting challenges\, forfeits and a load of other fun things to raise money\, as well as donating all of the money we receive from Twitch Subs during the stream. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Support Matt and help him raise funds for MDS UK! \n \n	\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	A BIG THANK YOU to Matt for putting in such an incredible effort in aid of our small charity. We thank him not only for the fundraising\, but also the fabulous awareness of MDS he is generating. \nToday\, more than ever – due to Covid – we need generous people like Matt to help us assist MDS patients and their families.

SUMMARY:Julie's Half Marathon Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Julie Grest run the London Landmarks Half Marathon on the 1st August in memory of her Dad\, Thomas Hamilton\, who died on the 1st of February. \nJulie says in her JustGiving Page: \nDad suffered from myelodysplasia\, a rare blood cancer\, and it was primarily this which brought his life to an end. As you can imagine\, it has been a difficult 18 months for Joan and all of the family\, and\, whilst I can’t do anything to change Joan’s condition I’d like to seize the opportunity to raise some money and awareness for an organisation that can.  \nMDS UK have been a massive support to Joan and the family throughout this really difficult period. I hope you can join me in attempting to repay just some of the kindness and love this inspiring and brave woman shows so many by supporting MDS UK. \nI will sleep in a bivvy bag (basically a sack) in bothies (basically a shack) and in the gardens of kind strangers who I have contacted via the Warmshowers cycle touring website. Due to the distance and terrain I won’t be doing much apart from pedalling for 10 days straight; expecting to average approximately 12 hours in the saddle every day and I expect it will be an eating competition as much as anything else! I have spent 6 months planning and training for this ride to ensure that my route\, equipment and body are in the best place they can be but I’ve no doubt there will be some surprises and unexpected challenges along the way. \nAny donation you can give will make a difference to the impact that MDS can have and will be greatly appreciated. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Support Nick and help him raise funds for MDS UK! \n \n	\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	A BIG THANK YOU to Nick for putting in such an incredible effort in aid of our small charity. He has already raised more than £2\,000!! \nWe thank him not only for the fundraising\, but also the fabulous awareness of MDS he is generating. \nToday\, more than ever – due to Covid – we need generous people like Nick to help us assist MDS patients and their families.

SUMMARY:Henry and Brett 3-peaks in 5 days in support of MDS UK!
DESCRIPTION:UPDATED 04-06-2021: BREAKING NEWS: HENRY AND BRETT GOT TO THE TOP OF BEN NEVIS!\nBrett sent to us yesterday night this moving message: \nJust finished Ben Nevis\, here are some pics.\nWe’ve hit £1000\, which is amazing. \nSUPPORT HENRY AND BRETT TODAY! PLEASE DONATE ON THIS JUSTGIVING PAGE \nHenry and Brett are climbing the 3 tallest peaks in the UK over 5 days\, starting with Snowdon before travelling onto Scafell Pike and finishing with Ben Nevis\, climbing over 11\,000 feet in the process.. \nBoth climbers were dear friends of Gavin Hepburn\, who passed away from MDS 5 years ago. \nFor those of you who did not know Gavin\, follow this link to read Gavin and his family story. \nWe thank Henry and Brett profusely for remembering Gavin this way and for never stopping to raise awareness and funds for MDS. \nGood luck to both! \nMDS UK \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Support Henry and Brett and help them raise funds for MDS UK! \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	Brett says: \nHenry and I are climbing the 3 tallest peaks in the UK over 5 days\, starting with Snowdon before travelling onto Scafell Pike  and finishing with Ben Nevis\, climbing over 11\,000 feet in the process. \nWe’ve been training by traipsing up and down the largest hills in Surrey and Sussex over the last year (when Covid restrictions have allowed us) which has given us plenty of time to discuss which charity we would like to support. \nIn truth it took us only minutes to decide we wanted to support the MDS UK patient support group. A little over 5 years ago we lost our dear friend Gavin Hepburn to MDS\, a tragic loss that impacted us both. \nHere are some pics from Scarfell Pike\, top middle. Fundraising is going really well\, and lots of people are asking us about the charity! \nI’ll mail you again with (hopefully!) some pics from Ben Nevis!! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Support Henry and Brett and help them raise funds for MDS UK! \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	A BIG THANK YOU to Henry and Brett for putting such brilliant efforts to raise funds and awareness of MDS. \nToday\, more than ever\, we need generous people like them\, to help us assist future MDS patients and their families.

SUMMARY:After harsh chemo and a stem cell transplant\, Paula walked from Crewe to Nantwich for MDS UK!
DESCRIPTION:Paula Taylor\, a brave MDS patient\, walked from Crewe to Nantwich with her family and friends to raise vital funds for MDS UK! Paula told us: \nIt took us around 6 hours. We did stop a few times though and celebrated with Prosecco and strawberries. \nPaula has surpassed her target and has raised £610 so far! You can still go to Paula JustGiving page and donate: \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Please Donate on Paula's JustGiving Page \n \n	\n\n\n\n\nSOME HIGHLIGHTS OF THE LOVELY WALK: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Paula is a school teacher. She was diagnosed with MDS in August 2019 after collapsing in school. After many blood transfusions\, the hospital told her the best treatment would be a stem cell transplant. \nPaula told us: \n \n“I was diagnosed with MDS in August 2019 and had a stem cell transplant in December. \nI was so scared\, I had never heard of it before and didn’t know what would happen to me and I feared for my family. \nI underwent harsh chemo and my body was prepped to receive new stem cells from a young man in Germany…my hero! \nI’m lucky\, I was given the all clear in March 2020 and my bone marrow is now being used for research purposes. \nAnyway\, after being a total nightmare and being at an all time low\, I have decided to pick myself up\, dust myself off and do something to help other people out.” \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“I’ve had a dreadful couple of years as I had to isolate after my transplant and didn’t know if I’d be home for Christmas with my family. Then the pandemic started. \n“The one thing that struck me was how little everyone was aware of MDS\, so there wasn’t much help available. The hospital recommended MDS UK\, so I recently joined the Facebook group. \n“It’s amazing how it feels like such a community. I felt less lonely when talking to others with the disease and knew they felt supported and comforted when hearing my story. \n“I had the all clear in March but have seen first-hand how MDS UK helps. \nI hope to raise as much money as possible through my stroll so the charity can continue to help people.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Please Donate on Paula's JustGiving Page \n \n	\n\n\n\n\nThank you so much Paula for deciding to help us in this way! You’re amazing! \nEvents like this are essential at a time where most of our fundraising events have been cancelled due to Covid19. \nIf you have a similar fundraising idea and would like to discuss it\, please contact us fundraising@mdspatientsupport.org.uk. \nTHIS IS JOSH\, PAULA’S LITTLE BOY\, IN HIS MDS T-SHIRT\, READY FOR THEIR WALK ON MAY 1ST!

SUMMARY:Hannah Russell is running 75km in memory of her dear Gaga
DESCRIPTION:I decided to run 75km in the month of April for my gorgeous Gaga’s 75th birthday (which was on the 2nd April!) to raise money and awareness for MDS\, Dementia and Macmillan. \nMy Gaga was diagnosed with MDS (a type of blood cancer) five years ago and has had blood transfusions every 3-4 weeks since. At the end of 2020\, after a year of poor health\, she was also diagnosed with Vascular Dementia and Alzheimers. \nUnfortunately\, she was admitted to hospital at the beginning of February and sadly she passed away on the 7th April\, just 5 days after her birthday. \n\n\n\n \n \n \n Support Hannah and help her raise funds for MDS UK! \n \n	\n\n\n\n\nHanna says: \n\nMy Gaga has been a huge part of my brother and I’s lives. She was the kindest person I have EVER met and deserved so much more than these cruel illnesses. She loved nothing more than being with her family and never shied away from telling us how proud she was of us. \nI know Dementia and Alzheimers affect so many people\, and MDS is a horrible disease with little research so I would be grateful for any and all donations ? \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Support Hannah and help her raise funds for MDS UK! \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	A BIG THANK YOU to Hannah for putting such brilliant efforts into this fundraiser that is benefitting MDS UK\, as well as another 2 charities. \nWe thank her not only for the fundraising\, but also the fabulous awareness of MDS it is generating. \nMore than ever\, due to Covid – we need generous people like Hannah\, to help us assist future MDS patients and their families.

SUMMARY:Twice a refugee\, by Ron Holder - Book Club Evening - 11/03 - 19:00pm
DESCRIPTION:IF YOU ENJOY BOOKS ON LIFE EVENTS\, SOCIAL HISTORY\, TRAVELLING – THIS IS FOR YOU\nOur charity\, MDS UK Patient Support Group\, is delighted to host a unique evening dedicated to author Ron Holder’s book ‘Twice a Refugee’\, which he finished writing before sadly passing away from a rarer form of blood cancer. \nAll audiences welcome\, not just those connected to MDS. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Register to take part in this very special Book Club evening \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nListen to these two excerpts of Ron Holder's "Twice a Refugee"\n\nThis 1st reading from Ron’s book describes his elation on the last day of his school life\, after being in a boarding school since the age of 4 ½ years of age. \nThis 2nd reading is a very powerful account of just one of the atrocities that Ron witnessed during his escape from the Belgium Congo on his Lambretta. It also details that he could not save others\, and was fearful for his own life. It was down to his prowess in Swahili and the local dialect of Kebembi which no doubt saved his life. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://mdspatientsupport.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Sophie-first-extract.mp3\n\n\nhttps://mdspatientsupport.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Sophie-extract-2.mp3\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Lawrence\, who was instrumental in encouraging Ron to write his life story\, will be presenting the book\, and talking about Ron’s incredible journey through life. \nChris Lawrence is a personal friend of Ron and Lin Holder. She was privileged to read the very first draft of Ron’s amazing story some years ago. \nThis real ‘life story’ is now captured for us all to enjoy in Twice a Refugee. \nChris was involved in proof reading and editing the book with Ron and Lin and is very enthusiastic about sharing Ron’s work\, and legacy for MDS UK\, with a much wider audience. \nChris is a Teacher Educator at Canterbury Christ Church University working with trainee teachers in special education in schools and colleges. \nA very unique opportunity\, which will hopefully entice many future readers. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Register to take part in this very special Book Club evening \n \n	\n\n\n\n\nMDS UK is the charity supporting patients and families diagnosed with the blood cancer Myelodysplastic Syndromes. As per Ron’s wishes and his wife Lin’s\, the sale of every book will benefit the charity. \nWe hope you’ll enjoy the evening\, buy the book\, and recommend it to many others. \nWhen:     Thursday Mar 11\, 19:00 pm\nWhere:   Virtual Zoom Call. Please register in advance: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAkdO-vqzsoHtP6NgMAsMn1OLEC1V2NO9Hm \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Any queries about the evening\, or to order the book\, please email kentgroup@mdspatientsupport.org.uk \nPLEASE SHARE THIS EVENT WIDELY AMONGST FRIENDS\, COLLEAGUES\, NEIGHBOURS\, WORLDWIDE \nThank you so much\, MDS UK \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Twice A Refugee”\, an extraordinary book by Ron Holder\, tells his gripping\, factual account of being a refugee twice in his life. \nRon was born to devout Christian missionary parents in China during WWII. The family fled the advancing Japanese army\, arriving in India as refugees. Placed in a boarding school at age just 4 1/2 so his parents could continue their missionary work in China\, his childhood became one of bitterness and resentment. \nAt just 15\, Ron was taken to The Belgian Congo following his parents’ religious devotion and commitment. 4 years of adventure\, which culminated in The Congo’s Independence and its descent into civil war\, resulted in Ron becoming a refugee again. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nMDS UK Patient Support Group Main Office\n\n\nadmin1@mdspatientsupport.org.uk / info@mdspatientsupport.org.uk\n\n\n\n0207 733 7558

SUMMARY:Christine is selling cards to raise money for MDS UK
DESCRIPTION:Our dear Committee Member and MDS UK Essex Regional Support group coordinator Chris Dugmore is “selling” cards to raise funds to MDS UK. \nChris said to us: \nI have been given these cards to sell by a friend whose wife\, Lynn Tait\, a successful and well-loved local businesswoman\, sadly died a few years ago of myeloma\, a bone marrow cancer. Her business closed and her family kindly donated the remaining stock of cards to support charities. \nThe cards are 16 cm (just over 6″) square and printed on high quality card\, with envelopes. The subjects include landscapes\, floral close-ups\, painted scenes of a local fishing village and garden scenes featuring small children. Some of the photographs are by Lynn herself and some by Charlie Waite\, a renowned landscape photographer who worked closely with Lynn to produce these beautiful cards. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMost of the cards are blank inside so can be used as greeting cards or notecards – though a few are birthday cards. I am selling them in “pot luck” mixed packs of 10 cards for £10 plus around £1.60 for 2nd class UK postage and packing. Cards of this quality for that price are hard to find in the shops! Some examples of the 40 different cards are posted in the gallery. \nBefore donating\, please contact me first at essexgroup@mdspatientsupport.org.uk to give me your contact details and I will send you clear instructions on how to donate. \nPlease use this page to make your minimum donation of £11.60 but feel free to round up the donation to benefit MDS UK! \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Please get in touch with Chris and click here to donate on her JustGiving page

DESCRIPTION:MDS UK unstoppable patron\, Caitlin Limmer\, is doing a 22-day virtual fundraiser for MDS UK ending on MDS World Awareness Day! \nStarting on Sunday 4th October for a “London Marathon Special”\, she will be asking attendees of her “Live on the Run” Zoom meetings to donate to our charity. \nAs a race director Caitlin wanted “Live on the Run” to motivate people to run or walk during the pandemic when exercising in groups was prohibited. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Please Donate on Caitlin Virgin Money Giving Page \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n	Caitlin said to us: \n“It’s been brilliant- I sometimes have up to 55 attendees! People log in and I provide music and put a session together. \nOn Sundays and Wednesdays\, I’ve been giving free sessions with some interval training or motivational speaking. I have a mixture of runners and walkers! \nI’ll now be repeating previous sessions to encourage people to run or walk and asking them to donate as and when they can.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	My MDS juices are starting to fly again\, and I’d love to raise £500!” \nWe would love Caitlin to hit her target! Please donate now on Caitlin’s VirginMoneyGiving page! \nKeeping fit during lockdown is a tough feat\, especially for MDS patients\, and with your help\, Caitlin can continue to make it easier! \nIf you’d like to walk or run in one of Caitlin’s online sessions\, please use the following Zoom credentials:\nMeeting ID: 674 316 5188\nPassword: 734767 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCaitlin Aims and Aspirations for MDS UK Patient Support Group
