They did it!! John O’Groats to Land’s End by bike.

Rob reports
“Gareth and I managed to complete our bike ride just before 5.30 on Sunday 18th August”. Amazing time!
Their Virgin Money Giving site is surrently showing £9,662.50 incl Gift Aid.
This is split with Sarcoma UK.
We thank all of their very generous friends, colleagues and families for this.
Well done to both of you Rob Azurdia and Gareth Morgan!

We hope to have more details of their epic cycle trip once they have had a chance to recover and write us a few lines.
This is an amazing photo and we are glad to see them both smiling.
Thank you again so much.  This is helping ensure we can carry on providing support and information to all MDS patients.

August 2013 – The start

On the 10th August 2013, Robert Azurdia and Gareth Morgan will be off on their great cycle challenge across the UK, to raise awareness and funds for MDS and Sarcoma, in memory of Rob’s father – Tony Azurdia – and his mother in law.

We wish them both best of luck, good weather and an enjoyable time too.
Truly grateful to them both for undergoing this tough challenge.  We look forward to photos and an account of their adventure.

And a detailed description as written by them

azurdia2013-2azurdia2013-3What are we doing?

On Saturday 10th August 2013 we will be saddling up and setting off on a 9 day cycle ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End. By the time we arrive in Land’s End on Sunday 18th August we will have covered over 900 miles, negotiated over 50,000 feet of hills and averaged over 100 miles a day. There will be no support van to carry our luggage, no mechanics to fix our punctures, no organised pitstops to re-fuel and no physios or dermatologists to tend to our aches and pains. Please give generously to push us on to the finish line.

Why we’re doing it

We’re hoping to raise awareness of two little-known illnesses, Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) and Sarcoma. We will also be raising funds for two charities associated with these illnesses, namely MDS UK and Sarcoma UK. Details of the charities and the work they do to support patients and their families and friends can be found by clicking on the links on the left of this page.

Rob’s father died from complications brought on by MDS in August last year having outlived the initial 6-18 months life expectancy he was given at diagnosis.

Having successfully beaten off one sarcoma in 2011, Rob’s mother-in-law was diagnosed with a second soft tissue sarcoma in 2012. Despite undgoing chemotherapy and a number of clinical trials, sadly she lost her battle with this horrendous illness in June 2013.

Approximately 2,300 people in the UK are diagnosed with a sarcoma every year. This includes bone sarcomas as well as soft tissue sarcomas.

Soft tissue sarcomas are cancers that develop from cells in the soft, supporting tissues of the body. Most develop in the arms and legs but they can also develop in specific organs such as the womb, stomach, skin and small bowel.

Sarcoma UK (www.sarcoma.org.uk) is the main charity in the UK funding research into causes of and treatments for sarcoma as well as providing a range of information and support services. Like MDS UK, it is a small charity reliant on donations from private individuals and companies.

You may well have heard of the charity’s patron, Richard Whitehead MBE. His epic plans to raise £1 million for Sarcoma UK make our challenge pale in comparison – to find out more about Richard, his version of the JOGLE and the opportunity to contribute to his fundraising efforts for Sarcoma UK please see www.sarcoma.org.uk/patron andwww.richardwhiteheadrunsbritain.com.

Thank you again both!
