As you know, we sadly lost Dad on 16th May 2018 to Myledoysplastic syndrome (MDS). This is not a well know condition and can lead to Cancer of Bone Marrow Cells. MDS is a group of malignant blood disorders in which the bone marrow fails to produce healthy blood cells. Dad heavily relied on weekly blood transfusions as part of his treatment and we were frequent visitors to the hospital - 2/3 times a week. Dad also had heart failure and with the combination of MDS, he fought both conditions courageously, positively & bravely, which is something I will also admire.
MDS is not a common condition and to be honest was not one we had heard of until Dad's diagnosis and is part of the reason I am doing this run, to try and get some awareness. I know there are lots of occasions where people are asking for donations, of which I would be truly grateful for, in order to contribute to the good work of the MDS UK Patient Support who helped us during the years but to also consider donating (giving) blood instead, as Dad was heavily reliant on blood transfusions and you never know when you or someone close to you may need one.
