I have just got insurance via Freedom Insurance, Cambridge - for £236 for my wife and I for a week to Estonia - to see our son who lectures in philosophy out there. (Well someone has to 8-) )
For just the medical stuff the insurance cover would have been £197 for both of us, but the one we got also covers hotel issues, flight issues, volcanoes the lot: 8-) . This is not cheap, but there is no ambiguity of cover on either of us should there be a problem.

My wife was diagnosed with a very very mild heart problem 4 years ago - she has had no treatment, but it has to be declared.

I was diagnosed with MDS RABII originally. My blasts got to over 10, before they put me on Azacitadine. I have been on that for 14 months, and have responded very well. My blasts now are <.5, white cells 4.4, Haemoglobin 15, Platelets 133. I have never had blood transfusions or inpatient stay. So this is a text book response best case for Azacitadine so Prof Mufti says. I am now on half dose Azacitadine, for only 5 days (it was 7), and only every 5 weeks (it was 4 weekly)

The lady in Freedom Insurance seemed very clued in, she asked intelligent questions as well as pulling up the scripted ones. She had to check with a superior about the idea of using chemo to just keep things contained for MDS, which he understood and agreed the cover

Freedom Insurance company seemed a lot more knowledgeable than Columbus, who I tried. Their script did not seem to work for what I have, and the fact that I am in remission did not figure – they declined me any insurance for the MDS aspect.
I tried to get through to World First Travel, but their computer was out of action.

I hope this helps

PS. My daughter had MDS as well, and is now over two years after an unrelated donor bone marrow transplant. If you want to follow our blog click here http://mds-in-the-family.blogspot.co.uk/

Hello all

http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2013/fe ... NTCMP=SRCH

This is a link to an article in The Guardian from two days ago, on the challenges for people with existing health conditions obtaining travel insurance. I hope it can maybe help somebody. In which case the posting will be worthwhile.

Best wishes.

Hi Meerkat

Yes, I saw that in the paper itself and ripped it out but thanks for posting the link. I'm sure it will be helpful. Have to start looking soon for our spring holiday to Italy but am hopeful that Columbus will be the same as nothing has changed in my condition since then.

Did you read that post I made regarding the research on iron chelation and some people becoming transfusion -free? It seems you aren't the only one that this has happened to - very encouraging.

Best wishes

Dear All

Thought I would update you on my expereinces of getting travel insurance for a 12-day holiday to Italy in May for myself and my husband, both 60+, me with MDS, him with no pre-existing medical conditions.

I tried a comparison site Money Supermarket - specifically for insurers for pre-existing medical conditions. I got 15 quotes for this, ranging from £97 to £321!! This included one company which has been favourably cited on this Forum, AllClear, whose quotes were £200 and £222!

I then tried the 3 insurers mentioned in the Guardian article which Meerkat posted:
1. Freedom Insurance quoted £151
2.Free Spirit quoted £143
3. MIA - I could not continue with a quote online as MDS not listed (though dyspepsia was - hadn't realised you had to declare indigestion as a pre-exisiing!!!). However, I e-mailed them and they immediately rang me. I answered a few questions - mainly about the impact of the disease on my health. They then offered me their standard European policy for £62.50. I then asked what the cover would be for my husband and they said he also wouold be charge £62.50- even though he has no pre-existing medical conditions. Therefore the whole cost would be £125.

I know I probably could have got a cheaper one for him but as I understand it, it is always preferable to go with the same company as otherwise they contest each other in the event of a claim.

So, in the end I went back to Columbus Direct through their onlin site who quoted £80.28 for both of us, which includes an additional premium of around £43 to include insurance for my pre-existing condition. (Cost without would have been around £37). Not sure if any of you use Top Cashback which, if you get directed to a company through its site, will pay a cashback amount. Anyway, I got 20.2% cashback which will get paid to me eventually, so that makes the cost of the insurance £64, so fairly happy with that!

I did not try EHIC plus which is an add-on to the EHIC card which gives us all free or reduced cost emergency treatment in EU countries.

Happy days!

Having searched around for travel insurance I found that Saga, Fish Travel insurance & Staysure will cover. I went with Staysure as they will cover me for an annual policy plus my partner. The cost for the policy was £858.14 but as we will be going at least 4 times abroad in the next 12 months I felt that it was worth the cost. With Saga and Fish combined for 4 single trips it came to over £1400.00 so you can see a big saving. Best of luck to fellow travellers.

Here I list the insurance companies, which cover medical conditions and were mentioned at one of the local meetings in Anglia region this year:

Columbus Direct, http://www.columbusdirect.com – or phone 0800 068 0060
Staysure over 50s travel, http://www.staysure.co.uk or phone 0800 652 8296 – quote DMA-43
All Clear, https://www.allcleartravel.co.uk or phone 0808 168 5828
Goodtogo, http://www.goodtogoinsurance.com, or phone 0800 849 8039

I'm also aware of a patient who following medical screening recently obtained an annual Europe wide cover, which includes cover for refractory anaemia from Avanti Travel Insurance, Century House, Century Drive, Braintree, Essex, CM77 8YG. 01376 560800. http://www.Avanti.co.uk

All options worth exploring.
I hope this helps,

Best wishes,

Hi everyone, I bank with the Nationwide. I am 54 and have 5q- when I travel I use them, I pay a supplement of £80 so I can have worldwide travel insurance. You have to meet the criteria and phone the company that Nationwide use, so far so good. Please use the link to find out more. http://www.nationwide.co.uk/products/cu ... -insurance ;)

For European travel I was quoted £60

Take care,

Hi, I have just had a really poor experience with M&S insurance linked to their premium credit card. They have a clause which rules out ability to claim if your GP refers you for tests as they did not know what was wrong. Between referral and diagnosis my wife and I took 2 holidays so I have been refused a refund for cancellation on basis of that referall even though he and I did not know what was wrong..... Nor did haematology consultant for 4 months.
